On this page
In Broken Arrow's data, artillery shells, mortar rounds, rockets and bombs carry a spread, given as two radii, and a blast radius. From the game's data This site shows both on the unit page. Worked out by this site How the game turns the spread into a landing point has not been traced, so parts of this page are our best reading. Not known: our best reading
Which rounds have a spread
Each round has a trajectory type, which by its name says how it flies: From the game's data
| Type | How it flies |
|---|---|
| 10 | Direct fire |
| 20, 30, 40 | Artillery, mortar and rocket arcs |
| 110 | Guided, leading its target |
| 200 | Cruise missile |
| 300 | Ballistic missile |
| 400, 410 | Bombs |
The spread matters most for the arcs, cruise and ballistic missiles, and bombs, which this page is about. Direct-fire guns carry the same two radii. From the game's data The duel uses them in a hit-chance model of its own, which it labels as this site's model. Worked out by this site
Spread
A round's spread is two radii in the data: a horizontal one and a vertical one. From the game's data For an artillery round they most likely mean lateral spread, across the line of fire, and depth, along it. That is our best reading; the game does not say. Not known: our best reading The unit page shows them as lateral × depth. Worked out by this site
Why the figures are doubled
The game shows every distance doubled relative to its data. From the game's code A Stinger whose data gives a low-altitude range of 1,000 m is shown as reaching 2,000 m, and it engages at 1,000 m of map. From the game's code
To keep one scale across the site, spread and blast are shown doubled too, as the game shows distances. Worked out by this site So a spread shown as 60 × 120 m is 30 × 60 data metres. The figures are still radii on the game's display scale, not diameters. Worked out by this site
How the game applies them: unknown
How the game applies the two radii to a shell is not known. Not known: our best reading The data says nothing about it, which leaves these questions open: Not known: our best reading
- whether the radii are the spread at every range, or only at the round's longest range;
- whether the spread grows with distance;
- whether shells cluster near the aim point or scatter evenly inside the area.
Until a source settles them, treat the spread as a comparison between rounds, not as a promise of where a given shell lands. Worked out by this site
Blast radius
The blast radius is how far from the impact the explosion does damage. From the game's data The data holds a second radius beside it, for suppression. From the game's data How suppression works is not documented, Not known: our best reading so the duel leaves it out. Worked out by this site The duel also leaves out area damage: its scenario is two units standing still and facing each other. Worked out by this site
Like the spread, the blast radius is shown doubled, as the game shows distances. Worked out by this site
Guided rounds: the same fields mean something else
A guided round, one that steers to its target, uses the same two fields for something else. From the game's code Its horizontal radius is its accuracy, and its vertical radius is its flare resistance. From the game's code Every guided round in the current data has an accuracy of 1.0, that is 100%. From the game's data
So for a guided round the two radii are not a spread, and this site never treats them as one: the duel's spread model skips guided rounds. Worked out by this site Whether a guided round hits depends on the target's countermeasures and, for some seekers, the shooter's stress. From the game's code See missile hit chance for that roll, and penetration and armour for active protection.
Time between salvos
Between salvos is the seconds between one burst and the next. From the game's data A burst is the shots fired in one go, the magazine is the shots fired before a reload, and Reload is the seconds it takes to reload a full magazine. From the game's data Rounds is the rounds carried: per weapon, or for pylon stores the total. Worked out by this site
How several pylons carrying the same missile share the time between salvos is not known. Not known: our best reading
Minimum range
Many rounds have a minimum range: a dead zone they cannot fire inside. From the game's data In the current data, 353 of 640 rounds have one. From the game's data Where a round has one, it is the first of two numbers in the Ground range column. Worked out by this site
