Target types

On this page
A round in Broken Arrow carries a TargetType number that, by the game's own flag names, says what it may engage: ground targets, vehicles, helicopters, planes, ships or incoming munitions. From the game's data This site reads its anti-air tags from that number, and the duel uses it to decide what each round may fire at. Worked out by this site
The flags
TargetType is a sum of flags. From the game's data The names below are the game's own, except flag 2: "Infantry" is this site's reading of it, explained in the next section. From the game's data
| Flag | Name |
|---|---|
| 1 | Ground |
| 2 | Infantry (our reading) |
| 4 | Vehicle |
| 8 | Helicopter |
| 16 | Aircraft |
| 32 | Ship |
| 128 | Projectile |
| 256 | Anti-radar (SEAD) missile |
| 512 | Cruise missile |
| 1024 | Ballistic missile |
To read a number, split it into flags. Rifles and machine guns carry 47. From the game's data That is 32 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1: Ship, Helicopter, Vehicle, flag 2 and Ground. Worked out by this site
That the game holds each round to its flags is read from the flag names, not confirmed in the game's code. From the game's data
Flag 2 and anti-tank rounds
In the data, flag 2 separates rounds meant for squads from rounds meant for armour: From the game's data
| Weapon | TargetType | Flag 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Rifles and machine guns: M16A4, M27 IAR, M249, AK-74M, PKP | 47 | Set |
| Grenade launchers: M320, GP-34, AGS-17 | 39 | Set |
| Light anti-tank: AT4CS-RS | 45 | Clear |
| Guided anti-tank: TOW-2A, Javelin | 36 | Clear |
| Anti-air: Igla-S | 24 | Clear |
45 is 47 with exactly flag 2 removed. Worked out by this site The RPG-7V and the SMAW each carry two rounds, one at 45 and one at 47: an anti-tank round and an anti-personnel one, split by precisely this flag. From the game's data
That pattern is why this site reads flag 2 as Infantry. It is an inference from the data, not a name the game publishes. Not known: our best reading
In the duel, a round may fire at a squad only if it carries flag 2. Worked out by this site Before that rule, six AT4s were taking 51 health off a 65-health squad inside one second, so an infantry fight lasted two seconds instead of twenty. Worked out by this site
Only this direction is checked. In the duel a rifle needs no rule against a tank, because against the tank's armour its penetration already reduces its damage to nothing. Worked out by this site A round that declares no target type at all is allowed to fire rather than silently dropped. Worked out by this site
Helicopters and planes
To engage a helicopter a round needs flag 8, Helicopter. To engage a plane it needs flag 16, Aircraft. From the game's data Rifles and machine guns (47) carry the Helicopter flag; a tank's HEAT round (39) does not. From the game's data
Sixteen anti-air missiles carry 1936 and no Helicopter flag: From the game's data
- the S-300's and S-400's: 40N6, 48N6, 48N6P-01, 9M82MD, 9M83M, 9M96 and 9M96M;
- the Buk's: 9M317 and 9M317M;
- the Patriot's: MIM-104E, MIM-104F and F MSE;
- SM-6, ESSM (RIM-162), IRIS-T SLM and the ground AMRAAM-ER.
1936 is Aircraft plus the four munition flags: Projectile, Anti-radar missile, Cruise missile and Ballistic missile. Worked out by this site By their flags, these missiles cannot engage helicopters. From the game's data Eight missiles carry 1944, among them the Pantsir's, the Tor's and the ground AMRAAM's, so they can. From the game's data 1944 is 1936 plus the Helicopter flag. Worked out by this site None of this has been tested in the game. Not known: our best reading
Units that carry an anti-air missile without the helicopter flag:
335ptsHow the site shows anti-air tags
Weapon tables show anti-air tags read from the rounds' TargetType: Worked out by this site
- Anti-air targets: it can engage helicopters.
- Anti-air targets: it can engage planes.
- Anti-air targets: it can shoot down incoming munitions, of the four kinds the game's flags name: projectiles, anti-radar missiles, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.
The S-300, S-400 and Patriot missiles show no Helicopters tag, because their rounds carry no helicopter flag. Worked out by this site

What the duel does with them
The duel follows the flags, and labels these rules as this site's model rather than the game's: Worked out by this site
- a round fires at a squad only with flag 2, at a helicopter only with Helicopter, and at a plane only with Aircraft;
- it reaches a helicopter through its Low-altitude range range, and a plane through the longer of its Low-altitude range and High-altitude range ranges;
- a weapon whose rounds have a ground range of 0 is reported as anti-air only.
A round with a ground range of 0 cannot engage ground targets at all; the 0 is not "no limit". From the game's data The duel has no altitude, so which air range it uses is its own choice. Worked out by this site Without one, no anti-air missile could fire at an aircraft at all. Worked out by this site
For how a missile that is allowed to fire then decides to hit, see missile hit chance. For how it flies, see how a missile flies.
